David Logan, Haggerdash’s director of tunes, is a tenor banjoist and mandolin player of note. In fact he has several notes including one from his mum excusing him from music lessons.
Nothing if not versatile, David also plays Mandola, Dobro (the singing coffee table), lap steel and 5-string banjo. In addition to these accomplishments he has been known to mime his way through an occasional chorus.
David’s claim to fame is that he was once the Scotland and north of England tenor banjo champion. True, he was the only person in the competition as the good players were on a bus that had broken down, nevertheless a worthy achievement!
Raised by the wild wolves in Lanark, David cut his musical teeth on the Ceilidh band circuit and in numerous sessions (if it’s too fast, you’re too old!). He believes this experience helps fill out
Haggerdash’s instrumental arrangements and in time he hopes to become a musician.
A keen instrument repairer, David also builds mainly fretted instruments and the boys are afraid to leave their instruments down on stage in case he dismantles them “just to improve the action”.
As well as being a powerful solo player, David is also a skilled accompanist and believes the true art of playing the banjo is knowing when not to play – the rest of the band agree!
